Give it facts it doesn't have to infer

Schema.org markup is the clearest signal you can send an AI system, because it states facts in a structured format instead of asking the model to read a paragraph and guess what's true. Organization schema with a complete sameAs list ties your business to verified social and directory profiles, which strengthens how confidently an engine treats you as a real, checkable entity rather than an unverified claim.

This matters even where the old reason for adding it has faded — Google's classic FAQ rich-snippet display in search results is far more restricted than it used to be, but that's a display decision, not a parsing decision. Perplexity, AI Overviews, and ChatGPT's browsing mode still read the underlying schema directly, so the payoff moved from 'better-looking search result' to 'more citable fact,' rather than disappearing.

llms.txt is an emerging, plain-text convention — sitting at a site's root, similar in spirit to robots.txt — that summarizes what a business does and links to its most important pages in a format built for language models to read quickly, rather than crawl page by page. It's not a guaranteed way to be cited, and adoption varies by AI provider, but it costs little to maintain and gives any crawler that does read it a fast, accurate overview instead of a guess pieced together from whatever pages it happened to fetch.

What's still evolving — and not worth over-optimizing for yet

This space changes quickly, and it's tempting to chase every rumored ranking factor for a specific engine. That's usually a poor trade: an hour spent making a genuine fact easier to find and verify helps you across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews at once, while an hour spent gaming one engine's current quirks can be undone by that engine's next update.

The foundations — crawlable content, structured data, direct answers, and real, checkable facts about your business — are stable bets regardless of how any single engine's algorithm shifts next. Treat this the way you'd treat classic SEO fundamentals: unglamorous, compounding, and worth doing properly once rather than chasing continuously.
